Alcatraz
Aug 16, 2009 by lorna from edinburgh
Overall Rating: 9 User Rating Score: 9

  • The personal insight given by ex prisoners and guards.
  • Wish we had more time!

“I recently took the nighttime tour of Alcatraz and found it a fantastic place to visit. An audio tour given by ex inmates and prisoners gives you an amazing insight into life on Alcatraz, while individual talks throughout the evening allow you to pick and choose what most interests you. We were amazed by Alcatraz's history as a military fortress, as well as home to many children and families of the prison guards. With fewer numbers of people allowed on the night tour, we had plenty of time and space to explore the island, and I would highly recommend booking early to get on this tour. We spent 2 hours on the island, and would still go back to see more. An excellent tour!”

San Francisco International
Feb 14, 2007 by Jon from New Jersey
Overall Rating: 2 User Rating Score: 2

  • I don't know.
  • It was the weirdest airport ever.

“I must say, this was one weird airport! Our flight was in rotunda a (which has since closed) but it was quite an odd journey from gate to rental car. The concourse was dilapidated, and the only open restaurant was a filthy snack bar. After we walked past the security lane, we had to ride a rickety elevator to the lower level baggage claim. At the lower level, there was a very large baggage claim area, filled with every different type of baggage belt imaginable (it seemed that they had all been added at different times). The space was very big but I don't remember how many belts there were. I think we got our bags quickly. We then had to take the air train to get our bags. It was not easily connected to our terminal. We had to walk through a strange parking garage walkway, cross the parking lot, take a series of elevators, and then get on the air train. We took it to the central rental car facility, and after that, nothing seemed strange.”

Fisherman's Wharf
Jul 23, 2006 by James from Craigavon, Northern Ireland
Overall Rating: 7 User Rating Score: 7

  • Staff, Food, Cycle Ride and Tour of the Bay.
  • Tacky Shops and Aggressive Staff.

“This was my third trip to San Francisco and my first where I was not accompanied by my children, so my wife and I, and our two friends, had plenty of time to browse and take in the sights, sounds and smells of Fisherman's Wharf. The area still has all its charm with the fog on the Bay giving that wonderful aura and ever changing views to the whole place. The Boat trip around the Bay was delightful for only 10 Dollars and the running commentary by the Crew was humorous and informative There were Fishing trips available with a lot of big fish, salmon and halibut, being returned, although the early start of 5.15 put me off the idea of going fishing. The highlight certainly had to be the cycle ride, courtesy of Blazing Saddles' and their predominately Irish staff, who were most helpful, which saw us cross the Golden Gate Bridge and freewheel down to Sausalito. Breathtaking and exhilarating! The food on the wharf was beautiful and their shrimp sandwich, contained enough prawns, which would make you at least half a dozen prawn cocktails, back here in Ireland. The staff in all areas were typically American, helpful, friendly, mannerly and considerate. There was one exception to the rule, and that was the 'camera' shops. I went in to buy a memory card and was subjected to the most aggressive hard sell I have ever experienced, as the staff tried to sell me lenses, camera cases and anything else that would make up a so called bargain. Although I managed to extricate my self, my friend was not so lucky and succumbed to their hard sell techniques, buying a camera which was described as a 'bargain' with a memory card and a case thrown in. The next day in a downtown reputable camera shop, we saw the same camera at half the price. My lens was also available, at a quarter of the price offered the previous day. Be warned, therefore - avoid these shops like the plague!!!”
